Taking your flight is the starting point of your trip. As seasoned Los Cabos travelers, my husband, kids and I try to set the mood for our holiday by relaxing and having fun together at the airport, even if everyone else seems stressed. To book your flight, you will need the airport code which is SJD (Los Cabos International Airport). Although ten years ago it was possible to travel with just a birth certificate, in today's security-conscious world we recommend a passport. If your passport has expired or you need to get one quickly for your children, we recommend getting your passport online.

Always make sure your luggage is well-organised and securely locked, as it can give you a nasty surprise when you land.

Booking your hotel in Cabo San Lucas

As a regular and long-time vacationer in Cabo San Lucas, I must admit that there is nothing more soothing than waking up to the sound of the gentle lapping of the ocean, bright sunshine and the music of tropical songbirds. Nothing like a day in paradise!

A typical hotel room in Cabo San Lucas starts at $140 per night (although there are cheap hotel rooms in Cabo) and goes up from there. The price depends on how many beds you need, the total area of the room, its location and, of course, the view it offers. Most of the hotels in Los Cabos are located in hotel complexes. For hotel guests, this means that facilities such as spas, fitness centres, daycare centres and kids' clubs are available. The concierge at the larger resorts will be able to arrange excursions and fun activities in Cabo San Lucas for your family, but we recommend that you book in advance online. This way you will save money and avoid any confusion that may be created by the language barrier.

If you are choosing your Cabo San Lucas Mexico hotel based on price alone, be sure to ask about additional charges. Most room rates are based on double occupancy, which means that if you are more than two people, extra charges will apply. Most hotels in Cabo San Lucas have a service charge and some even add holiday surcharges, so be sure to ask as these extra charges can add up quickly. Once you know what you are willing to spend, you can choose a hotel in Cabo San Lucas based on location. You can stay in Cabo San Lucas itself (which is at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, along the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez), along the Corridor (between the San Jose del Cabo airport and the tip) or on the Pacific side. For those of you who are avid surfers, you will enjoy the rough waters of the Pacific.

I recommend that you "stay where you play". If you have a main activity that you are going to do, stay close to it. If you are a fisherman, stay at the marina. If you want to spend your entire holiday at a resort relaxing by the pool, stay at one of the great resorts along the Corridor, like Dreams Los Cabos Suites Golf Resort & Spa. If you get tired of the same activity, you can always take a taxi or rent a car.

If you are on a budget, it is cheaper to stay in San Jose del Cabo. Hotel rooms can start from $70. For example, the El Encanto Inn which is located in downtown San Jose.
